Gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is also known as 4-hydroxybutanoic acid, a naturally occurring neurotransmitter and psychoactive therapeutic agent. All parts of the brain have GABA, glutamate and glycine precursors. The GHB recipient and GABAB recipient are mildly agonistic. GHB has been administered in a surgical setting for general anesthesia and cataplexy, narcolepsy, and alcohol. It is also used illegally for poisoning, change in fitness, date rape, and recreation. It has also been used illegally as a fitness supplement. GHB is also produced as a result of fermentation. GHB is also found in some sodium hydroxybutyrates in limited concentrations in beer and wine, beef and small citrus fruits.
The most common health uses for GHB today are opioid therapy  and more incidental alcoholism, although randomized controlled trials have not confirmed its use for alcoholism. Fibromyalgia is often used off-label. GHB is the active ingredient in the prescription treatment for sodium oxybate (Xyrem). Narcoleptic drugs are used to treat cataplexy in US clearance of sodium oxybate and prolonged daily somnolence (EDS) associated with narcolepsy. GHB has been shown to consistently improve slow sleep and reduce the tendency for REM sleep modified sleep latency studies.
GHB is a central nervous system that is depressed and used as a medicine. The symptoms were known anecdotally as ethanol (alcoholic) and MDMA, e.g. euphoria, disinhibition, increased ibido, and empathogenic disorders. GHB can cause dizziness, drowsiness, restlessness and vision, dysfunction, respiratory disturbance, memory loss, unconscious mood and death in high doses. A potential cause of GHB death is polydrug toxicity. Co-administration into the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors can be complementary to other CNS depressants such as alcohol or benzodiazepine. They all bind to receptor positions.
